ABB, in collaboration with Lhyfe and Skyborn, is embarking on a significant renewable hydrogen project, SoutH2Port, aiming to optimize the integration of offshore wind renewable hydrogen production into the energy system.
The project will involve the construction of a hydrogen production plant in Söderhamn, Sweden, connected to Skyborn's 1 GW offshore wind farm in Storgrundet. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce approximately 240 tons of hydrogen per day, making it one of Europe's largest suppliers of renewable hydrogen. ABB will leverage its expertise in automation, electrical, and digital technologies to optimize the integration of hydrogen and electricity production across the entire ecosystem. The collaboration seeks to develop scalable, commercial energy transition projects in the region, exploring Power-to-X conversion technologies for carbon-neutral energy carriers like hydrogen.
The project aligns with ABB's strategy in both the hydrogen and offshore wind markets, emphasizing the importance of seamless supply chains to accelerate the energy transition. By combining the strengths of ABB, Lhyfe, and Skyborn, the project aims to expand the value creation associated with renewable hydrogen production and contribute to the decarbonization of the Swedish energy system. Furthermore, it will generate employment opportunities and enhance the competitiveness of the region.
