RWE and the town of Bedburg have announced the construction of a new wind farm, Windpark Bedburg 3, marking their third collaborative project in the region. The project includes the installation of nine wind turbines with a total capacity of approximately 60 megawatts (MW), to be built on recultivated land at the Garzweiler open-cast mine.
Scheduled to begin construction in April 2025, the wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. Seven of the turbines will each have a capacity of 7 MW, with the remaining two rated at 5.7 MW, placing them among the most powerful onshore turbines in operation. Once completed, Bedburg will host a total of 156 MW of installed wind capacity.
Sascha Solbach, Mayor of Bedburg, emphasized the importance of the project for the town’s role in the regional energy transition, noting that revenues from the wind farm will directly benefit the local community. Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, praised the continued partnership and the optimal use of the site’s conditions.
Ownership of the new wind farm is split equally between RWE and the town of Bedburg, as with the two previous projects. Surrounding communities will also benefit, with up to €250,000 in annual revenue expected to be distributed, primarily to Bedburg, with a portion going to nearby Jüchen.
This initiative adds to ongoing renewable energy developments in the area, including solar and agri-PV projects, further solidifying the region’s shift toward sustainable energy.
