Google has entered an agreement with Kairos Power to utilize small nuclear reactors for powering its artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The first reactor is expected to be operational by 2030, with more to follow by 2035. This deal is part of Google’s strategy to meet the growing energy demands of AI while aligning with clean energy initiatives.
According to Michael Terrell, Google's senior director for energy and climate, the partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of advanced nuclear energy, helping the grid meet AI energy needs more reliably and sustainably. Jeff Olson, an executive at Kairos Power, emphasized that this collaboration is crucial for commercializing advanced nuclear solutions, which can aid in decarbonizing power grids.
The project, which still requires approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local agencies, will involve reactors using molten fluoride salt as a coolant, a technology distinct from traditional water-cooled nuclear plants. This marks a significant step in addressing the tech industry's increasing electricity demands as data center energy consumption is expected to double by 2030.
