Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI), in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO), has announced an $86 million investment to establish an advanced manufacturing facility in Western Pennsylvania. The 160,000-square-foot Advanced Switchgear Factory will focus initially on producing vacuum and gas circuit breakers, eventually shifting to predominantly vacuum breakers. This project marks MEPPI’s first new U.S. factory in over a decade and aligns with efforts to support the country’s renewable energy goals.
Upon reaching full production, the facility is expected to create over 200 full-time jobs. Additionally, MEPPI plans to expand its Warrendale, PA facilities to incorporate new power electronics and testing labs. These developments will integrate advanced software and automation technologies, enhancing operational efficiency and maintaining high product quality standards.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is contributing to MEPPI’s expansion with a $4 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant and a $2.75 million Pennsylvania First grant. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the importance of these investments, noting their role in boosting the local economy and creating new employment opportunities.
Tricia Breeger, President and CEO of MEPPI, highlighted the significance of this facility, stating that it will "better serve our customers and significantly advance the production of components essential to the nation’s decarbonization goals."
