Natron Energy has announced plans to invest nearly $1.4 billion in constructing a GW-scale manufacturing facility in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, dedicated to producing 24 gigawatts (GW) of sodium-ion batteries annually. This facility will be the first of its kind in the United States, representing a significant advancement in the country’s energy storage capabilities.
Supported by a North Carolina Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), the new facility will enable a 40x increase in Natron’s current production capacity and is expected to create 1,000 local clean energy jobs once fully operational. Colin Wessells, Founder and co-CEO of Natron Energy, emphasized the strategic choice of North Carolina, citing the state’s leadership in the clean energy revolution and its growing green industries.
Located at the 437-acre Kingsboro mega site, the plant will span nearly 1.2 million square feet. The state of North Carolina is supporting the project with over $50 million in grants, and the JDIG agreement could reimburse Natron up to $21.7 million over 12 years. The project is projected to grow the state’s economy by $3.4 billion over the same period.
Natron’s sodium-ion batteries, made with patented Prussian blue electrodes, offer a more sustainable and faster-charging alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. They require no lithium, cobalt, copper, or nickel, and are non-flammable, making them a safer and more environmentally friendly option. The company aims to supply its batteries to industries such as data centers, EV fast charging, microgrids, and telecom.
