Siemens Smart Infrastructure has completed the first successful 1MW charge using its prototype Megawatt Charging System (MCS). The innovative system, based on Siemens' SICHARGE portfolio, successfully powered a long-haul prototype eTruck from a well-established manufacturer during testing. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the advancement of electric long-haul trucking.
The prototype MCS highlights the potential for megawatt charging to revolutionize the long-haul trucking industry. The system consists of multiple SICHARGE UC150 power cabinets, a switching matrix, and a customized MCS dispenser. The central switching matrix bundles output power from the charging stations and directs it to the MCS dispenser, enabling the fast and efficient charging of batteries in eTrucks.
This breakthrough could transform long-distance transport, making it more sustainable and efficient. Siemens CEO eMobility, Markus Mildner, emphasized the importance of fast MCS during mandatory driving breaks in long-haul transport. He noted the need for widespread implementation to support the EU's climate goals and improve air quality.
Heavy-duty vehicles account for over 25% of greenhouse gas emissions from road transport in the European Union. Siemens' Megawatt Charging System aligns with the EU's climate objectives, aiming to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. By 2035, new urban buses will need to be zero-emission vehicles.
The successful testing of the MCS presents new opportunities for fleet operators and transport companies to gain a competitive edge through sustainable practices.
