SSE, a prominent energy company, has achieved a significant milestone by securing over 1.1 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power contracts in Great Britain's T-4 capacity auction. This accomplishment underscores SSE's commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and supporting the UK's transition towards a sustainable future.
The contracts, provisionally awarded for the delivery year 2027/28, encompass a diverse array of renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric, pumped storage, battery storage, and onshore wind units. A total of 46 units across 35 site locations in Scotland and England have been earmarked to contribute to the nation's homegrown energy supply.
Among the highlights of SSE's success are the securement of 1,074MW of de-rated hydro-electricity generation and pumped storage capacity across 29 hydro sites in the Scottish Highlands. Notably, the renowned Sloy scheme, the largest conventional hydro-electric power station in the UK, is set to play a crucial role in this endeavor. Additionally, contracts have been secured for onshore wind farms in Scotland, further diversifying SSE's renewable energy portfolio.
Furthermore, SSE Renewables has secured long-term agreements for three under-construction battery storage sites in Northern England. These projects, located at Monk Fryston, Ferrybridge, and Fiddler's Ferry, mark a significant step in repurposing former coal-fired power stations for renewable energy production, contributing to SSE's vision of a net-zero future.
Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of SSE Renewables, expressed his satisfaction with the results, emphasizing SSE's role in delivering renewable energy and supporting the UK's climate action goals. The provisional contracts await confirmation by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), marking a pivotal moment in SSE's journey towards a cleaner, greener energy landscape.
