Adani Green Energy Limited has announced plans to develop a colossal 30 GW renewable energy plant on barren land at Khavda in Gujarat's Kutch region, making it the largest power plant globally regardless of the energy source. The project, sprawling over an area of 538 sq km, commenced in December 2022 and saw its first production on December 31, 2023. Currently operational at 2,000 MW solar energy capacity, the project aims for further expansion, targeting 6 GW production by March 2025 and 45,000 MW by 2030.
With an investment of approximately US$18 billion (Rs 1.5 lakh crore) from Adani Green Energy Limited and US$27.6 billion (Rs 2.3 lakh crore) from the Adani group in renewable energy and manufacturing capacity by 2030, this endeavor marks a significant leap towards sustainable energy. Spanning an area five times the size of Paris and almost as large as Mumbai, the Khavda project is a hybrid renewable energy cluster, harnessing solar energy during the day and wind energy in the evening.
Utilizing innovative technology, the AGEL project site employs waterless cleaning robots to address dust accumulation on solar panels, boosting energy output while conserving water in the arid Kutch region. This initiative aligns with India's push towards self-reliance in renewable energy, with government support playing a crucial role in fostering such developments. Vneet Jaain, MD of Adani Green Energy Limited, emphasizes the extraordinary support from both central and state governments, envisioning India's self-sufficiency in renewable energy within the next three to four years.
This monumental project not only signifies India's commitment to renewable energy but also its contribution to global efforts in combating climate change. With the potential to avoid approximately 58 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, Adani Green's Khavda plant sets a new benchmark in sustainable power generation.
