Northeastern US states have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to improve interregional transmission planning and development, aimed at advancing the region's clean energy transition and boosting grid reliability. The MoU, signed by New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont, establishes a framework for coordinated efforts.
Led by a coalition of states, the initiative seeks to leverage mutual benefits in increasing electricity flow across three distinct planning regions. This collaboration includes assessing infrastructure needs for offshore wind projects, a pivotal component of the region's renewable energy strategy.
Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey emphasized the collective response to climate challenges and the economic opportunities presented by strengthened regional partnerships. The collaboration aims to foster a more reliable and resilient grid infrastructure while supporting New Jersey's ambition to become a national offshore wind hub.
Christine Guhl-Sadovy, President of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), highlighted the significance of developing a robust transmission network to support the burgeoning offshore wind industry. The MoU outlines mechanisms for information exchange and joint efforts in tackling barriers to transmission projects.
The strategic action plan will focus on identifying and addressing these barriers, setting technical standards for offshore wind transmission equipment, and facilitating the integration of clean energy resources into the northeastern grid.
