The world's first 100% electric high-speed foiling passenger ferry will soon be powered by renewable electricity supplied by Power NI, part of the Energia Group. This innovative venture is part of Project Green Iron, a pilot scheme that aims to utilize green energy from an Energia Group wind farm in County Antrim to operate the Artemis EF-24 Passenger ferry's Belfast to Bangor route.
The Artemis EF-24 Passenger ferry, operated by Condor Ferries, will drastically reduce travel time along Belfast Lough to around 25 minutes, cutting congestion, noise, and air pollution along the A2 route. The ferry's groundbreaking design incorporates the Artemis eFoiler® system, which allows it to glide above the waves, providing a smooth, emission-free journey for passengers and minimal disturbance to shorelines.
The collaboration between Artemis Technologies and Power NI aims to maximize the use of renewable wind energy by aligning charging times with periods of excess generation. This flexible approach not only balances the grid and supports renewable energy utilization but also reduces reliance on fossil fuel backup power.
