GE Vernova has announced an expansion of its manufacturing site in Stafford, UK, which will double the facility’s production capacity of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transformers and create approximately 100 new jobs. The Stafford site is the UK’s only large-scale grid manufacturing facility.
The expansion includes a new HVDC transformer testing laboratory and offers opportunities for apprentices, trainees, engineers, and manufacturing specialists. HVDC transformers are essential for transporting large volumes of electricity over long distances with minimal loss, supporting the integration of renewable energy into power networks across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Recently, the Stafford site produced its first transformer for the TenneT 2 GW programme, one of the largest single-phase transformers manufactured there, which has been deployed in the North Sea for the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm. The facility will also support the Eastern Green Link project, supplying and constructing HVDC converter stations to transmit renewable energy across Britain.
Johan Bindele, VP and CEO of grid systems integration at GE Vernova, highlighted that the expansion reflects increasing demand for HVDC technology critical to grid modernization and electrification. Government officials, including Minister of State for Industry Sarah Jones and Stafford MP Leigh Ingham, support the project as a key milestone for the UK’s energy future and job creation.
GE Vernova provides equipment supporting over 30% of the UK’s electricity generation and operates another major manufacturing site in Rugby.
