A 178-tonne supergrid transformer will be delivered to the new Bengeworth Road substation in Lambeth this weekend, marking a significant milestone in the National Grid’s £1 billion London Power Tunnels 2 project. The transformer, essential for powering London’s growing electricity needs, will be delivered by specialist vehicles, escorted by police, as part of efforts to strengthen the capital’s power infrastructure.
The London Power Tunnels 2 project aims to modernize and expand the electricity network across the city, supporting the increasing demand for energy and facilitating future growth. The new Bengeworth Road substation will play a critical role in the project by helping to manage the distribution of electricity more efficiently across London. Notably, this facility will be the UK’s first substation to operate without sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), an insulating gas traditionally used in electrical equipment.
This transformer delivery is one of several key steps in the overall project, which includes the construction of additional substations at Acre Lane and Bedford Road. The London Power Tunnels 2 project is designed to reinforce the city’s electricity grid, ensuring it can meet the demands of both residential and business users in the years to come.
With the first transformer’s delivery underway, similar deliveries will continue into 2025, further enhancing London’s power network and contributing to the growth of a more sustainable energy system.
